Mad Max: Fury Road is a 2015 Australian post-apocalyptic action picture show co-written, co-produced, and directed by George Miller. Miller collaborated with Brendan McCarthy and Nico Lathouris on the screenplay. With the world becoming a desert wasteland following a societal collapse from warfare over resources, a survivor named Max Rockatansky is captured and taken to Immortan Joe'southward Citadel by his army of War Boys. Max is imprisoned and used as a "claret handbag" for a ill War Boy called Nux. Meanwhile, Imperator Furiosa, ane of Joe's lieutenants, is sent in her armoured "War Rig" to extract gasoline and ammunition. When Joe realises that his v wives are fleeing with her, he leads his regular army in pursuit of Furiosa, calling on the aid of nearby Gas Town and the Bullet Farm.

Nux joins the pursuit with Max strapped to his motorcar, and a battle ensues between the War Rig and Joe's forces. Furiosa drives into a sand tempest, evading her pursuers, except Nux, who attempts to sacrifice himself to destroy the Rig. Max escapes and restrains Nux, only the automobile is destroyed. Subsequently the storm, Max finds Furiosa repairing the Rig, accompanied by the wives: Capable, Cheedo, Toast, the Dag, and the Excellent Angharad, the last of whom is heavily pregnant with Joe'due south child. Max steals the Rig, but reluctantly agrees to allow Furiosa and the wives accompany him. Nux sacrifices himself by wrecking the Rig, killing Rictus and blocking the canyon, allowing the group to escape in Joe'south car. Max transfuses his blood to Furiosa, saving her life.

Back at the Citadel, Joe's subjects rejoice when Furiosa shows them his dead body. Furiosa, the wives, and the Vuvalini are cheered by the crowd. Max and Furiosa both share a glance of gratitude before he leaves.

Survival and humanity [edit]

Robbie Collin of The Daily Telegraph gave the film a full v stars and praised its acting, screenplay, choreography, stunts, humor and direction, describing it as a "Krakatoan eruption of craziness".[112] In The Guardian and awarding the film four out of five, Peter Bradshaw wrote that it is "extravagantly deranged, ear-splittingly clinking, and entirely over the top", a "bizarre convoy chase activity-thriller in the post-apocalyptic desert".[113] Lindsay Bahr of the Associated Printing described the film as "radically visionary".[114]

IGN reviewer Scott Collura gave the film 9.2 out of 10, describing "the over-the-top stunts and eccentric characters and designs are all hugely important to Fury Road, every bit are the troubled figures like Max himself and Furiosa, but it's the overriding sense of the motion-picture show'due south uniqueness, its striving to be something more than than but another action movie, that is virtually impressive."[115] Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film iv out of four and wrote that Theron and Hardy are "one of the best activity duos always, in ane of the all-time activity movies".[77] Similarly, Rolling Stone 's Peter Travers called the film "a new action classic", with particular praise towards its editing, costumes and soundtrack.[116] Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote a mixed review, praising the cinematography and Theron's performance, but perceiving the moving picture as a "long, ho-hum chase".[117]

The film has been praised by scholars on several fronts. Women's studies scholars take praised the ascendant role taken by Furiosa and the range of atypical female roles, including the wives and the gun-toting Vuvalini,[118] and disability studies scholars have commended its positive, non-stigmatising portrayals of physical and psychological disabilities.[119] Several critics accept named Mad Max: Fury Road one of the greatest action films ever made.[120]

Mad Max: Fury Road was listed on over 170 film critics' top-10 lists for 2015, including 58 offset-identify rankings and 26 2d-place rankings.[121]

Mad Max: Fury Road was named 1 of the best films of 2015 by numerous critics and publications, and was named Rotten Tomatoes' best scoring movie of 2015.[122] [123] The film topped Metacritic's tally of film critics yr-terminate best film lists, with 58 critics naming it their best film of the twelvemonth.[124] Mad Max: Fury Road was named the nineteenth-greatest film of the 21st century in a 2016 BBC critics' poll.[125] In 2017, it was named the "nineteenth-best moving-picture show of the 21st century and then far" by The New York Times.[126] In January 2020, Empire voted it as the best motion-picture show of the 21st century.[127]

The film received 10 nominations at the 88th Academy Awards, including Best Pic and Best Director, and won 6 Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Product Blueprint, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, surpassing all other films at the awards ceremony,[135] and bankrupt the record for the nigh wins for an Australian moving picture, previously held by The Piano (1993), which won three Oscars.[136]

Future [edit]

During the writing process for Fury Road in 2011, Miller and McCarthy found that they had enough story material for 2 additional scripts.[137] In March 2015, during an interview with Esquire, Hardy revealed that he was attached to star in three more than Mad Max films post-obit Fury Road.[138] Miller told Wired in May 2015 that if the motion-picture show becomes successful, he will tell the other ii stories.[139] Later that month, Miller revealed that plans for the sequel had changed and the fifth film in the franchise will instead exist titled Mad Max: The Wasteland.[140] [141] That Oct 2015, Miller'southward squad had scripts for ii sequels.[142]

Later that month, Miller clarified that Mad Max: The Wasteland was a working title for the sequel.[143] Miller reaffirmed his intent to go along the franchise after reports to the contrary surfaced.[144] In Nov 2017, it was reported that a lawsuit filed by Miller's product company against Warner Bros. over a disputed $7 million bonus was likely to delay the production of whatsoever sequels.[145] In July 2019, Miller told IndieWire that iii films are being considered: ii Mad Max stories and a Furiosa story.[146]

In Oct 2020, a prequel, titled Furiosa, entered "advanced development" at Warner Bros., with Miller ready to straight. Anya Taylor-Joy has been bandage to portray a young Furiosa, while Chris Hemsworth and Tom Shush will too star in unspecified roles. Miller will co-write the screenplay with Nico Lathouris, while Miller and Doug Mitchell volition produce through their Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner.[147] In Dec 2020, Warner Bros. appear that the film will be released on 23 June 2023, which was later pushed back to 24 May 2024.[148] [149] In a February 2021 interview, composer Junkie 40 confirmed that he would return to produce the score for Furiosa.[150]
